12.11.04 Diabetes retinopathy screening service. A new diabetes retinopathy screening service has started within the Torfaen area, as part of the all Wales service (DRSSW) . All our surgery managed diabetic patients are offered a annual review. During the review our nurse will seek patient consent for referral to the new service. This service replaces the current testing for retinopathy. Once registered with the service patients will be recalled by DRSSW when appropriate. The service will be run locally.
Diabetic retinopathy is a disease caused by damage to blood vessels in the retina of the eye. Laser treatment can usually prevent further damage to the retina. For further details contact Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Service Wales on

1.10.2004 New disabled facilities. The practice has recently been fitted with more aides for assisting patients with disabilities. This includes; Wheelchair ramp to front of building, Extention of path to rear. Visual patient call display (see below). Tactile signage. T position hearing loop (please request if needed for consultation). Low level assistance buzzer.
21.9.04 New Patient call system installed. We are currently having a electronic patient call / information system installed from Jayex technologies.

The system will give audio and visual signals to call patients, and will also allow us to display practice information for patients waiting to see GP.

23.3.2004 New telephone system. We are currently updating our telephone system. This will increase our line capacity, handle calls more effectively, and allow patients to contact the out of hours service with one phone call. For the initial period we would appreciate your co-operation whilst staff familarise themselves with new telephones.
1.3.2004 Changes to Saturday Surgery.
The New National GP contract comes into force on 1st April. From this date the surgery will no longer be open on Saturday Mornings.
However a ‘Emergency Only Service’ will continue to be provided. Patients needing urgent treatment on Saturday Mornings should contact the surgery (871177). Calls will be assessed, and when appropriate, medical assistance will continue to be available.
Concerns regarding changes to this service should be directed to the Local Health Board (01495 752230) or the CHC Community Health Council (01495 740555)
